UPSC had declared the result of IAS Preliminary 2013, which was conducted on 26 May 2013, on 2nd August, 2013. IAS Main 2013 will start from 1st December, 2013. The last date for the submission of the IAS Main form is 18th September. This will be the first occasion when the IAS Main will be conducted on the changed pattern having four papers of General Science and only One Optional subject.
The following changes have been made in the IAS Main Exam.
  • Now there will be Four Papers of General Studies instead of two papers of General Studies.
  • Now there will be only one Optional Subject Instead of two Optional Subjects.
  • Now the Optional Subject will be of 500 marks instead of 600 marks.
  • Now the Essay Paper will be of 250 marks instead of 200 marks.

The aforesaid changes will have a profound effect on the result of the exams. The candidate should know these changes in the details and should accelerate their preparation in the right direction. The IAS Main Exam will now have more weightage of the General Studies. The newly introduced General Studies Paper III is the expansion of the previous year syllabus with some additional topics such as the Representation of the People Act and some important legislations in India.
The General Studies Paper IV is the new addition in the family of General Studies. Though it was a part of the Personality Test only in the previous years but from now onwards a special paper is added in the IAS Main written exams. It is inserted in the Main Exam to check the Ethics and Integrity of the candidate.
The New Pattern will have a greater proportion and weightage of General Studies in the total marks which will provide a kind of level playing field for all the candidates.

Conclusion
General Studies’s ratio is now more than half of the Total Marks.

Now the General Studies has the highest weightage in the total marks in the IAS Main Exam. The candidate should now focus their preparation more on the General Studies as it is more than 50 % of the total marks. Click here to get the Syllabus.
